Chapter Six

They’d barricaded themselves in the office, so my mom must have realized that something was going on, though there weren’t any zombies in there with them. Yet. She’d pushed most of the furniture in the office against the door and sat as far from it as she could, keeping her arms protectively around my sleeping daughter.

I ran for the door, but Jason grabbed my arm.

“Let go!” I shouted.

“Wait!”

I pulled my arm from his grip, fury and terror clouding everything else. “I can’t leave them up there! They’re on the top floor. They’ll be hit by the bomb!” I didn’t mention the zombies. The thought was too horrible to entertain. “I have to go get my baby!”

“Of course we’ll get her. Just wait a second. We can’t just go running out there unarmed. There are five floors of zombies between us and them.”

He had a point. And the thought of it made me want to curl up in the fetal position and take up thumb-sucking.

I ran after Jason to the arsenal. He strapped on several guns and shoved a few knives in his belt buckle. Two backpacks full of medical supplies rested under a shelf and Jason grabbed one, upending it.

Two med kits, bandages, and a variety of antiseptic sprays and ointments spilled to the floor.

“Come here,” Jason said, popping open one of the kits. “We need to bandage up that arm before we go out there.”

I didn’t argue. The thought of walking into a mass of zombies with a fresh, recently-bleeding wound made my stomach turn.

I grabbed a bottle of water and rinsed my mouth out before guzzling half the bottle while Jason tended to my arm. The water settled my stomach a little.

He did a quick but thorough job, using a good half bottle of rubbing alcohol before wrapping it in several layers of bandages. I hoped it would do the trick. The last thing I wanted was to give the zombies more incentive to come after me.

Once I was patched up, Jason took the now empty packs and shoved extra ammo and a couple grenades he’d found on a back shelf into one of them.

The grenades made me nervous, but I knew they’d come in handy, if we didn’t blow ourselves up first. I took the second backpack and emptied it of everything but a first aid kit and some bandages. Running back into the kitchen area, I also packed several water bottles and a bottle of Russell’s whiskey.

Jason cocked an eyebrow at that.

“It’s a disinfectant and it’s flammable. Win-win.”

Jason gave me a quick smile and slipped his bag over his shoulders. Then he handed me a gun.

“If you can’t hit their heads, aim for their kneecaps or legs. If they can’t walk, they can’t come after you.”

I tried not to look too nervous. An uncle used to take me out target shooting when I was younger but that had been a long time ago.

We went to the bank of monitors and tried to get some idea of what we’d be walking into.
